Reg Mombassa

I met Reg last year during the Brisbane Semi-Permanent design conference and have admired him from the times when wearing a Mambo T-shirt meant you were the coolest cat on the block. He laughed when I told him how one school break I worked for over a week picking up horse shit just to buy one of his T-shirts. He’s a softly spoken creative soul and in my opinion, one of New Zealand’s finest exports. He stopped by the office a few weeks back for a coffee and a chat.

Check out this epic clip, ‘Egypt’, by classic Aussie rock band Mental as Anything. Reg was lead guitarist.

Come to Daddy

Every time i need to access my inner Zen-state, like when battling Sydney grid-lock traffic or dealing with parking officers – I close my eyes, take a deep breath and remember the work of Chris Cunningham.

For about a year I’ve been wanting to blog about this freakishly talented director, filmmaker, musician and photographer and last night I had the chance to see him perform in the flesh at this year’s Vivid LIVE Festival in the Opera House. The genius behind music clips for the likes of Aphex Twin, Leftfield and Bjork – Cunningham’s show was nothing short of brilliant. With multi-screen projections and head pounding rhythms –  I wasn’t quite sure if I was in hell or asleep in a nightmare. Ahh, so soothing…

Skateistan

I stumbled upon this video looking for reference for an upcoming assignment. Im not completely sold on the idea of a fashion label (in this case, Diesel) putting their logo to something so morose as the situation in Afghanistan, but hey – the film is insightful, unique and very interesting.

SKATEISTAN: TO LIVE AND SKATE KABUL from Diesel New Voices on Vimeo.

Everything is Data.

I could waste time and space with superlatives when referring to Radiohead (and more particularly Thom Yorke…) Instead Im just going to let you watch the clip and get on with peppering your ears and mind with awesomeness.

Directed by James Frost, Director of Photography Yon Thomas. Below is ‘The Making of Video… brilliant.

Best Film of All Time

Every time I watch this (there’s been too many times to count) I get shivers down my spine. Anyone who’s seen Paris Texas would agree that this is a brilliant film worthy of a Palm D’Or from the Cannes Film Festival in 1984. Next time you’re at the video store looking for a classic on a rainy day be sure to pick this one up. If you don’t like it Ill refund your 2 bucks.
